Top HR event to tackle legal risk

by |
From workplace investigations to ambiguous legislation, HR professionals can easily land themselves in hot water if they fail to apply employment law accurately – now, one industry event aims to mitigate the risk by providing practical and easy-to-understand advice.

“There are a lot of everyday HR situations which require a solid understanding of employment law,” said event organiser Jemma Tolhurst. “What we’re trying to do is make sure New Zealand’s HR professionals are equipped with that knowledge and are empowered to make decisions that they know are both fair and free from risk.”

According to Tolhurst, the Employment Law for HR Managers masterclass will focus on the legal issues currently proving most challenging for industry leaders – including legislative amendments, workplace investigations, and addressing mental health.

Simpson Grierson partner John Rooney will be discussing the details of just how quickly employers can legally terminate an employee while ensuring procedural fairness for all parties and Duncan Cotterill partner Mark Lawlor will be hosting a session on the legalities of disciplining a difficult or toxic employee who doesn’t necessarily have any performance issues.

Chapmann Tripp partner Garth Gallaway will also be hosting a session, offering an update on the Health and Safety and Work Act, while Buddle Findlay partner Sherridan Cook will be providing insight into the Holiday’s Act, described as “fiendishly difficult” by commenters.

The masterclass will also feature expert speakers from Russel McVeagh, Bell Gully, Buddle Findlay and Kensington Swan.
