Top 5 most competitive industries of 2019

Momentum in the recruitment industry is shifting in 2019. From a high volume of employers fighting for the top candidates – to a high volume of candidates fighting for the best roles.

Having more candidates this year, however, doesn’t mean employers will have it easy filling in vacancies. New research suggests employers will only have a bigger pile of CVs to sift through.

Recruiters are now inundated with applications, receiving as many as 79 CVs on average for a job opening, according to recruitment software group TribePad.

“It’s a tough environment for both jobseekers and employers,” TribePad CEO Dean Sadler said.

Today, even before an applicant lands an interview, they first have to battle it out with a number of contenders – leaving recruiters overwhelmed by the volume of applications per role.

“This therefore makes it difficult for employers to identify the best talent, at the speed required, so they’ll often settle for good-enough, rather than the best, which can have knock-on effects to businesses performance,” Sadler explained.

TribePad’s study also revealed 2019’s five most competitive industries, along with their average number of applications per role:

1) Logistics – 79 applications
2) Hospitality – 67
3) Tech, telecoms and media – 53
4) Automotive – 50
5) Legal – 38
     Retail – 38

“The sheer number of applications per job can overwhelm businesses if they’re not prepared,” Sadler said. “Employers have to ensure they have recruitment solutions that can cope, that can utilise technology to help manage and vet applications during busy periods, at scale. Because in a competitive business environment, it’s important you have the best staff for the job.”
